Third Option : Real time from parralel port

In this mode, you will not neeed a recorder, PowerDyn will carry out the acquisition of the signal for you. It will be necessary for you to buy the parralel port kit on the AutoDiag site. The advantages of the parralel port kit is its simplicity of implementation and the certainty to obtain precise results.

Wire it all up as explained here AutoDiag.

Before you will need to Configure a vehicle, Then choose the parralel port real time option in the drop down menu before clicking on the torque power button.

You can check that the engine's rpm is well interpreted simply by clicking on the green play button. If your engine is started and the connections are correct, the engine speed will appear in real time. You can stop posting by clicking on the cross.

You are ready to take a measurement. Choose the gear/ratio on which you will carry out measurement. If you wish to bring back your measurement of power in the CNTP (normal conditions of temperature and pressure), select the use of SAE Vous êtes prêt à faire une mesure. Choisissez le rapport sur lequel vous allez réaliser la mesure. This will allow you to compare two measurements carried out under different weather conditions. If you select use threshold departure, you will be able to choose the starting rpm from which acquisition will start automatically as soon as you have pressed on the green play icon. Choose the duration of the recording. 5s corresponds for an acceleration in first gear, 10 or 15s for an acceleration in second gear, 20s for a test in third gear. If the acceleration does not last as long as you selected, PowerDyn will automatically detect the end of your acceleration when doing the phase analysis.

Drive a few kilometres to heat up your engine as as well as the tyres (the coefficient of friction decreases with the temperature of the tyres). The measuring accuracy depends on the conditions under which you will carry it out. The ideal is to use a very flat road, on a day without rain or wind. If you think that the road is slightly sloping, you will have the possibility of carrying out a test in each direction and making an average with the two results. The ideal is also to make measurements on the same road, by staring in the same place.

When you are ready, if you are using the release with a starting threshold, click on the Start recording icon and start to drive on the gear/ratio chosen without exceeding the release rpm level. As soon as you want, will accelerate flat out, the recording will start. At the end of your acceleration, continue to drive normally while passing the supperior gear/ratio, PowerDyn will draw your curve after the selected time is over.

If you do not use the threshold of release, acquisition will begin as soon as you click on the start recording icon.(Or the A lkey on your keyboard).

Carry out the smoothing of the graph if you wish to, but do not exceed level 4 under penalty of drawing you aside from reality. Finally click on the diskette to save your measurements and to associate them to the vehicle in progress.

Summary :

  • The "play" button on the menu toolbar starts the rpm meter
  • The cross stops the rpm meter.
  • The diskette allows you to save rpm/power data on the selected vehicle (Marqued in the title toolbar). Careful all previous trials will be erased.
  • The printer allows you to print the content of the screen (in landscape mode)

Vehicle selection screen ( See the interactive demo

PowerDyn allows you to save in its own database, More than one tests on a single vehicle. The unique ID and name that you give it. You can see a few vehicles available in this list. There is a comentary zone for the settings of the test for example. The obligatory information are :

  • Mass of vehicle (and its occupants). For the fuel, think take away the allready consumed mass.
  • Lost in the transmition (You can put 0, if you want the power to the wheel). The value you put in is an estimation in %. However this value is hard to know and is dependant on the vehicle. In general, This loss is around 12-15% for front or rear wheel drive, and 17% to 20% for all wheel drive.
  • Spakrs per turn : for a 4 time usual sparks, spark every two turns (0.5 times per turn), But for a spark lost, there is a spark every turn. Please consider carefully.
  • Frontal surface (or height and width) and Drag Coefficient (Cx) or Scx. If you know the Scx (See specialised magazines) enter it directly. SIf you knwo the frontal surface and the Cx, PowerDyn calculated the SCx (=Fontral surface * Cx). If you do not know the frontal surface, an approximation will be made according to the height and width. For example for a car, we use 0.8 * width * height, which sensibly corresponds to a modern saloon.
  • Tyre size : Real Diameter (for a Slick) or manufacturers carateristiques
  • Tyre pressure
  • Conical torque and gears
  • Atmospheric conditions for the air density and SAE corrections

This screen allows you to :

  • Delete a vehicle / trial
  • add a vehicle / trial
  • Modify a vehicle / trial
  • Print
  • Import one or more vehicle(s)
  • export a vehicle
  • Select the vehicle for the rest of the evaluations or consult the default results

Now that your vehicle is configured, Select it to continue, either by clicking on the green arrow or by double clicking above in the list. In the main screen, you will be able to see which is the vehicle in progress in the status bar (bottom of the screen).

First thing to be made, select the Wav file containing your recording. Then, select the gear/ratio on which the measurements were done. Inform the max. rpm if you do not wish to have the whole curve. Then choose wether you want SAE correction. Click on the Play icon, and your curve will be traced. If you have an error message, it is possible that the threshold of detection is badly fixed. Change the threshold of detection (you have a visual outline of your signal and level of detection in the chart window on the top right) press on Play again.

It is normal that the obtained signal completely smoot. You have a cruve smoothing feature to make it less chaotic. When your signal is sufficiently clean (see screen above for example), record it. It will be affected to the vehicle in progress.
