What is it ?

PowerDyn is THE perfect alternative to costly rolling road setups. It will give valuable information of the influence from modifications of the following parameters (non exhaustive) :

•  Air/fuel ratio, ignition timing, fuel quality, chip tuning, air filters, Exhaust systems, Intake manifolds, Carburettors...
•  Aerodynamic modifications (wheels, spoilers...)

PowerDyn is positioned as the ideal performance measurement tool for anyone (amateur or professional) seeking to get the maximum performance out of his/her vehicle be it for competition or every day use.
The main functionalities of PowerDyn:

Designed for eager amateurs and professionals, seeking to know the performance of their vehicle, evaluating the impact of their modifications (gear/ratios of transmission, tyre size, electronic equipement, air filter, exhaust and intake systems, ignition parameters, fuel delivery...). It is very easy to view the effect of various modifications to the vehicle by carrying out a measurement before and after changes. It will also enable you, from time to time to check out the wear of your engine by carrying out a measurement.

How does it work ? ?

A rolling road (or dynamometer) measures the acceleration of one or more rollers (generally made out of steel) of masses and known sizes. The inertia of the rollers is very simple to find, the torque of the vehicle is easily calculated while exploiting some corrective coefficients.

PowerDyn, uses the acceleration of the vehicle on the road to perform its calculations. The external factors are more numerous than the standard rolling road, and the precision of the final results will depend on a good approximation of the latter.

When a vehicle moves it must thwart different elements (forces) which are opposed to its movement :

•  Rolling resistance by friction with the ground
•  Aerodynamic forces
•  Slope
•  Inertia and resistance of components like the wheels, brake discs, transmission and engine flywheel

Rolling friction depends on the weight of the vehicle, pressure and temperature of tyres, as well as speed. Speed is not a very significant factor and the coefficient of resistance varies very little. When the tyres are hot or pressure increases this coefficient decreases. The force of the rolling friction becomes less significant than the aerodynamic drag towards 50 to 60 km/h (depending on the aerodynamic SCx of the vehicle).

In fact, it is the aerodynamic drag which influences most. It depends on the density of the air, Scx (main torque = Cx * frontal surface) and speed.

 

 

The inertia of the masses in rotation remains the hardest element to evaluate. Let us assume that the inertia of all the revolving masses in the vehicle can be assimilated to an additional mass added to that of the vehicle. We can therefore calculate a factor of mass, slightly over unity which multiplies the effective mass of the vehicle. This "factor of mass" coeficient depends on the ratios of the gearbox used (final drive included), of the estimated mass of revolving elements at the speed of the wheels and another mass of elements turning at the speed of the engine.

PowerDyn uses all this data to compute Torque according to RPM.

How do I link the software on the PC to the vehicle ?

There are two options.

1- If you enjoy DIY and have a minimum of experience in electronics and LOTS OF PATIENCE, then you can make your own interface for datalogging. Once the device is made you must log the RPM signal data directly into the PC sound card (laptop, best solution) or an audio recorder such as MiniDisc, MP3 or dictaphone (with microphone input).
